Miss Minchin told Sara to go dress in her new clothes and attend lessons that day, rather than go on errands the ways she has for the past few years. She angered me the most in chapter sixteen after the Indian gentleman sent Sara a new coat in the mail.

She only ever treats Sara well because of her wealth.

The adults in this book are the worst, especially Miss Minchin. That strength alone makes her the best child character I have ever read about so far. Sara Crewe exhibits the most important form of strength: perseverance through adversity. Even though she is humble and polite, she still has moments when she breaks down or lets her pride get the best of her. She keeps her manners and stays mindful of her reactions to her friends and enemies. She doesn’t spite the other girls at the school now that they have more wealth than she does. When she doesn’t have anything physical to give, she readily extends kindness to others through her smile.

She shares with those of less and equal fortune. Even after she loses all her wealth and is thrown into the attic, she still keeps the generous and humble attitude she had before. Sara’s father showers her with love and treasures, never considering expense, yet she never acts spoiled. For less educated characters like Becky, Frances Hodgson Burnett annexes H’s and I’s and spells words the way they’re pronounced in the characters’ dialogue. Granted there are moments when the narrator or characters would use the word “ejaculate” as a synonym for “said” or “gay” instead of “happy”, but that’s as complicated as the writing gets. What I love the most about children’s novels from the early 1900s is the simplistic writing. Will she find that kindness and generosity are all the riches she truly needs? Review (Minor Spoilers): Transformed from princess to pauper, she must swap dancing lessons and luxury for hard work and a room in the attic. But when she learns that she’ll never see her beloved father again, her life is turned upside down. Step into Sara’s shoes as fate determines her fortune…Īlone in a new country, wealthy Sara Crewe tries to settle in and make friends at boarding school.
